Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, it is caused by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. Although it ranges in seriousness from mild to severe, it is most serious for infants and young children. The air sacs can fill with fluid or purulent material causing a phlegm cough, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing.

The symptoms of pneumonia vary based on the type of germ causing the infection as well as your age and health. New-born’s and infants don’t always have symptoms, they may vomit, appear restless with little to no energy, or have difficulty eating and breathing. Although there are many causes of this infection the most common is bacteria and viruses found in the air, and the most common found in infants and three month olds is a pathogen called Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Ibrahim Mara is an infant who was admitted to Magbenteh Community Hospitals under fives clinic with a case of severe pneumonia. He’s been in the hospital for 3 days now receiving antibiotics. The nurse on duty assures us there’s hope for baby Ibrahim and his recovery.
