Crowdfunding Humanitarian: Mireia Villen Llexia

Ms. Mireia worked in Sierra leone in 2015, as an Ebola scientist for public health England, then she volunteered at Magbenteh Community Hospital as a laboratory consultant. Her work gave her visibility to the devastating mortality rate in children and pregnant women which she never forgets. “I do remember very well the way people live in Magbenteh and how little they have and even with that always smiling” Fast forward to the present, Mireia, who is currently living in the U.K, has recently been certified as a yoga teacher. “I always had in my mind that I wanted to contribute again towards the Magbenteh Community Hospital. There’s a link between Yoga and volunteering. Helping others without the expectation to receive anything back. To me, that’s a lifestyle”. In June 2020, she started a Crowdfunding campaign dedicating her weekly online yoga classes revenues to raise money to help keep the Paediatric and Pregnant Women Wards open during the Covid19 crisis in Sierra Leone. Mireia knows how little budget the hospitals in Sierra Leone dedicate for these essential services and the lack of funding is a major setback that will elevate the mortality rate again. “I am hoping that the findings towards Magbenteh Community Hospital continue and more people participate, that they are able to reach out to more people in Sierra Leone. But personally, my biggest hope is that they can treat every child in need and to give the best care possible for them.”
